With an increase in use of technology in learning settings, there are also problems entailed in increasing reliance on digital media in and outside of the classroom. Today, Sera, Enrico, and I will be discussing the topic of cyberbullying and how teachers and students can negotiate the complex issues of it.

Theory/concepts

  • First, our results show the value of using digital media in ways that align with and support students’ interests, provide them with opportunities to take on meaningful, creative roles, and connect to their social and cultural contexts. (Davis et al. 2017:43)

  • At the same time, our findings demonstrate how existing institutional practices and constraints can make it difficult to use technology in these identity- and agency-supporting ways, particularly in formal educational contexts. (Davis et al. 2017:43)

  • Digital media technologies afford opportunities for identity expression and agency, but their use is shaped by institutional constraints and sociopolitical dynamics. (Davis et al., 2017:44)

  • Digital media literacy is a complex and multifaceted concept that involves not only technical skills, but also critical thinking, social and cultural awareness, and ethical and moral considerations. (Davis et al. 2017:44)

Digital media refers to technologies such as smartphones, tablets, and computers that allow for creation, sharing and consumption of digital content.

(Digital Culture & Education (Davis et al. 2017:32)

Social Media is the means of connection for people through creating, sharing, and exchanging information and ideas in online communities. (Tufts University, 2021)

Study learning and engagement is the ability to motivationally and behaviorally engage in an effective learning process. (Empire State University n.d.:’Learning Engagement’)

In an educational context, the meaning of facilitate is to make an action simpler or easier. Facilitated learning is student-centered, with an emphasis on self-assessment and peer review. (Mezni n.d.:’Facilitated vs Directed Learning’)

The increasing reliance on digital media in and outside the classroom brings several notable benefits and challenges.

The reading underscores several benefits associated with the increasing reliance on digital media in education. It introduces the concept of the ‘connected learning model’ which places students' interest at the core of their educational experiences, emphasizing the use of digital media to empower students, support their identities as learners, and enrich their learning experiences. This approach is shown to enhance academic achievement and engagement. Moreover, the reading highlights how digital media, when aligned with students’ personal interests and peer cultures, can create more engaging and personalized learning environments. Additionally, digital media is recognized for its potential to offer flexible learning opportunities, allowing students to access educational content at their own pace and convenience. (Davis et al. 2017:32-34)

Despite the advantages, the reading also identifies challenges associated with the growing reliance on digital media in education. It implies that a digital divide exists, as not all students have equal access to digital media and technology, potentially leading to unequal learning opportunities. Moreover, the reading suggests that in many urban schools, the utilization of technology remains limited and often restricted to direct instruction, preventing the full realization of its potential benefits. Furthermore, institutional constraints and prevailing social norms in schools are recognized as barriers to innovative and interactive uses of digital media, which can hinder the adoption of more progressive and learner-centered approaches to education. Balancing these benefits and problems is essential in leveraging the potential of digital media to provide effective and equitable education. (Davis et al. 2017:32-34)

In dealing with cyberbullying, students and teachers can team up to make sure the online learning environment is safe and welcoming. To help students ( connected learning model), teachers can include lessons about using the internet responsibly in their teaching. They should point out the importance of being polite and respectful online. Encouraging good online behavior can make students keep the internet a positive place. Students can also form support groups to report incidents and help each other playing an active part in stopping cyberbullying. Keeping communication open between teachers, students, and parents. It means everyone works together to make sure online activities are safe.

In conclusion, the increasing reliance on digital media in education has its pros and cons. On the positive side, it allows for personalized and interactive learning experiences, boosting student engagement and creativity. Nevertheless, it brings forth the issue of the digital divide, where not all students have equal access to technology, potentially exacerbating educational inequalities. Additionally, the misuse of digital media can lead to distractions and a decline in the quality of learning. To maximize the benefits and minimize the problems, fostering responsible digital media use and providing comprehensive digital literacy education are essential. In the context of addressing cyberbullying, collaboration between students and teachers is pivotal in creating a safer online learning environment. Achieving this balance requires a proactive and thoughtful approach to ensure that digital media enhances rather than hinders the educational experience.
